The Girls Varsity Track Team has started their season with strong performances, currently holding 11th place among all teams in the City Championships. The captains leading the team this season are seniors Emma Cheng, Abby Schwartz, Sadie Bess, and Wiktoria Sadowska.
When asked about their goals for this season, Emma said, “My goal for the team is to win Queens Borough champs for the indoor and outdoor track seasons. We have a really strong team this year, so I think we have a good chance if we work hard in the next month.” Abby added, “My goal this season for me and everyone is just to continue to work hard in practices so it pays off at the meets.”
Being captain entails holding new responsibilities and expectations. Wiktoria said, “My expectations as captains are to do our best to keep the team together and have a good season. I plan to achieve this by pushing myself and encouraging the team.” Sadie said “We strive to make track as supportive and tight-knit of a community as possible, by encouraging the team and hosting team bonding events. With a lot of hard work and dedication, we also aspire to do the best we can at city championships.”
Sophomore Kimberly Pareja said, “I think the captains have been a perfect fit for our team because of their leadership skills and commitment to the team as a whole. This year’s captains have been really dedicated and helpful when it comes to creating a close bond within the team.” Another teammate, sophomore Chloe Rosin said the captains “motivate everyone on the team by cheering them on or by simply trying to make running as fun as possible.”
The captains also reflected upon their growth from previous years of running track. Emma said, “I went from not being able to run more than a mile to running my first half marathon this past season along with some of my teammates and I’m really proud of how far we’ve all come.” Abby Schwartz said, “My last years on the team have definitely been challenging since we have such hard workouts, but it’s also where I formed some of my best memories and got closer to my best friends.”
Abby said, “I’d define a team as a group of people who all come together to encourage and support each other so we can all have fun and do our best.”
