Given that the spring season started on March 27, the athletes on the Townsend Harris Girls Flag Football team have set new goals.
Junior and captain Ana Montan said she looks forward “to achieving the goal of keeping morale up, as captain I hope to continue making bonds with each individual member of our team, engaging in meaningful conversations on and off the field.” She adds on with her individual goals, saying how she wants to be “playing her best” and said that she will “attend as many practices as I can, stay active on the weekends, and make sure to take care of my body – both mentally and physically.”
Senior Ioanna Giannopoulou, one of the two other captains of the team, shares similar goals for the season as Ana. Ioanna said, “My personal goal for the season is to become an overall better quarterback for my teammates.” She adds on by saying how she’s looking forward to communicating with her teammates, she said, “I think commitment is really important as well as communication.” She values her teammates greatly and hopes to maintain and strengthen these relationships on and off the field throughout the season.
Freshman Keira Legaspi, agrees with Ana, and emphasizes the significance of team bonding and understanding the strategic aspects of the game. She said, “A personal goal I have is to bond with the team and really learn the game.” Keira plans to achieve this by actively engaging with her teammates during practice sessions, learning from both practical experience and observing professional games.
Freshman Melissa Lai, a newcomer to flag football, is determined to uphold the team’s undefeated streak. She said, “I would love to stay undefeated for the rest of the season! I recently just started playing flag football, and it’s been such a great experience. We’re currently on a 2-0 streak.” Melissa’s strategy involves giving her best effort during practices and offering unwavering support to her teammates during games. She acknowledges the learning curve as a new player but is eager to contribute her best to the team’s success.
Freshman Emmie Krikheli, eager to learn and grow alongside her teammates, expresses her desire to improve her overall understanding of the game and her role on the field. She plans to achieve her goals by watching the upperclassmen play, actively participating in practice sessions, and bonding with her teammates on and off the field. Emmie said, “[she’s] super lucky that the entire team clicked and are friends.” Emmie’s appreciation for the team’s unity drives her motivation to not only perform individually but also contribute to the team’s overall success.
Townsend Harris Girls Flag Football coach Matthew Curiale said, “we have a lot of returning members as well as new players, and everyone comes to practice every day and gets better every day, and I expect them to do well this season.”
The team currently holds a record of 4 wins and no losses. They hope to achieve these goals as the season advances.
