Athletes from all sports teams were honored on June 4 at the first annual Townsend Harris Varsity Dinner, held at the Villa Russo in Richmond Hill. Principal Malcolm Largmann, Queens High School Superintendent Samuel Kostman, Queens College Dean Robert Haan, alumni, faculty and parents attended this event.
The athletes’ effort and spirit were commended in brief speeches by faculty members Arthur Boulanger, Myron Moskowitz and Wanda Nix. Coaches from each team also spoke.
Each athlete received either a major or minor letter, based on participation, and a pin and certificate for membership on each team. Awards for the most outstanding athlete and coach’s awards were presented for each team.
Student-Athlete awards were given to those Arista members who participated in team sport. The best male and female athlete in the school received commendations.
Athletic Director Don Altman said, “I am pleased about the quantity as well as the quality of our student athletes. The school had about one fourth of the total enrollment participate on our teams. I don’t think many other schools can top that.”
