With the 2025 S!NG season now over, the Semore directors talked to The Classic about the past season and reflected on their last year leading a S!NG team.
Seniors Katie Chan and Joshua Chung led this year’s Semore team, spending hours shaping the narrative and bringing their ideas to life through a script.
When asked about what they’ve learned as an overall, Katie said, “I’ve learned that writing a 50-minute fleshed out story that involves intricate world building is very difficult. I think our story this year was less ambitious and a lot happier. I’d like to think it made for a better show. I’ve also learned that I shouldn’t take on every task that comes my way, there are other people to help me. Last year, I was running around trying to fix every problem that came up instead of enjoying the show that I’ve created.”
Josh said, “Checking in on others and taking the time to admire and praise their hard work and effort really goes a long way. Make sure the people you’re working with know that their efforts are loved and praised. The main thing that helped us improve was being more organized and setting deadlines on ourselves, which helped out with [our] workflow and staying on track.”
Both Katie and Josh have also had prior experience with theater productions and acting, which helped them develop the leadership qualities needed to be a director. Josh said, “I only acted in three roles in my entire life, two were in S!NG and the other one was in the Spring Musical. It shaped my journey towards overall director, as I got to see and study firsthand not only how acting is done in a theatre setting, but how stories and performances work on a stage.”
Katie said, “I’ve had around nine years of experience. I’ve done school plays since third grade, and I’m a part of a non-profit theater program called TADA! Youth Theater where I’ve been cast in a few original off-broadway shows. Thanks to these experiences, I know how a production runs and what is needed from a director.”
When reflecting on previous S!NG productions that they have performed in themselves, Katie said her favorite role was Robyn from the 2023 S!NG season. Katie said, “He’s probably the only character that I can really see myself in and the show has so many great moments for him. I had so much fun playing Robyn and I really wish I can go back to that season of S!NG and play him again.”
Josh said, “My favorite acting role was [also] in the 2023 Semores S!NG season, [which happened] during my sophomore year. I was able to express myself and go crazy when playing the character.”
Despite their roles as overall directors, they would like to pursue something outside of performative arts, but still enjoy theater and what it may hold for the future.
As Josh said, “There is a lot that I want to pursue, including music and video creation, but I wouldn’t say I’m closing the door on acting either.”
Katie said, “ As much as I love the arts, I really enjoy STEM as well and I want to pursue forensic science.”
