Last month, the cast members of the Nightingale Theatre Company performed the 1982 musical Little Shop of Horrors in the Townsend Harris auditorium.
Students who saw the show shared their praise for it with The Classic. Freshman Madison Wong said, “it demonstrated the large talent Townsend Harris has. The vocals and acting were amazing.”
Assistant Principal of English Ryan Dunbar, who served as the show’s producer, said that the show was well-received by audiences: “Sometimes I think maybe I’m a little bit biased, but when I hear from everybody else just how well it went I know then for sure that it’s an excellent show.”
To prepare for the songs, vocal coach Rich Louis Pierre and vocal coach Lynda Irizarry worked with the whole cast on vocal progression.
“If you listen to those songs, every single one was really powerful,” Mr. Dunbar said, “and if you could hear where the students were…in the audition process versus where they ended up on the night of the show, you’d be blown away.”
Junior Luke Lopez performed the voice of Audrey II, the killer alien plant at the center of the show. “This role affected me by realizing there’s so much that goes on in voice acting,” Luke said.
Members of the cast and the orchestra performers shared praise for one another’s performances.
Sophomore Victoria Ng, who performed in the musical, said, “credits to the voice actor because the plant had this exceptional attitude that made it. It added the humor to this horror play.”
Freshman Dean Saghafi, who played baritone, saxophone, and trumpet, said, “I think it was a great and amazing experience, and I’m really going to miss all the seniors.”
Many complimented the seniors. Mr. Dunbar said, “What [senior] Julia Waters did on closing night, singing ‘Somewhere that’s Green,’ [was amazing]. I could just see the tears falling down her face as she fully embodies Audrey.”
“Honestly I just feel like it went amazing. People should go watch Nightingale’s play next year,” Victoria said.
