On December 2, the Girls Varsity Basketball team travelled to Richmond Hill to take on the Richmond Hill Lady Lions in the first league game of the season. The Hawks proved to be the much stronger team as they came out on top, 67-24.
The Hawks started the game off strong, by putting up 16 points in the first quarter compared to only five points scored by the Lady Lions. This set the tone for the rest of the game, as the Hawks scored at least 16 points in each of the four quarters, scoring 16 in the second, 17 in the third, and 18 in the fourth.
Senior Vasia Makris said, “We played well and worked as a team. In general we have good chemistry and it translated into our game.”
The Hawks dominated in every aspect of the game. The Hawks’ defense limited the Lions’ opportunities to score as they never gave up more than seven points in a quarter and held the Lady Lions to only eleven two-point field goals and zero three-point field goals. The Hawks outrebounded the Lady Lions 61-34. The Hawks had thirteen assists, 30 two-point field goals, one three-point field goal, and the Hawks were 4 for 6 on free throws; all these totals were greater than those of the Lions.
The Hawks had many different leaders in all of the categories. The team leader in points was junior Debra Chan who totaled 16 points on eight field goals. Debra also led the team with four assists. Senior Sierra Berkel led the team in rebounds with eight, and Sierra was tied for the team lead with freshman Marina Aweeda with two free throws made.
With this win, the Hawks extended their regular season winning streak to 35 games, as they have not lost in the regular season since February 2, 2011 against William C. Bryant. The Hawks have dominated against Richmond Hill, winning each of the last seven times they have met. The Hawks play the Lady Lions again on Wednesday, January 8, at home.
Vasia said, “Hopefully we can keep up the good work and have another successful season.”
The next game for the Hawks is on December 9 at Townsend Harris against the Long Island City High School Lady Bulldogs who are currently 0-1.
