Each year, Baruch College hosts the “Newsies!” This is an awards ceremony dedicated to student journalism in New York City. This year, The Classic earned the two top prizes: the “Dow Jones Best Overall Print Newspaper” award and the “Dow Jones Best Overall Online News Site” award. Fending off competition from publications by Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School, The Classic became the first publication to win the two top awards.
Individual students also received awards for their work. Rachel Chabin’s article on Ms. Wallace’s battle with breast cancer was named the best feature of the year. John O’Neill’s report on the girls basketball win-streak was named the best sports writing. A news article on feminist activism at THHS written by Alexa Luciano, Sharon Chin, and Amanda Ruggieri won an award for social-media reporting. In addition, Kari Iocolano earned a prize for her photojournalism; Christina Wang earned one for her artwork; and Harry Petsios earned recognition for his opinion writing.
In total, The Classic received nine honors. It won seven prizes for the 2012-2013 school year, including the top prize for online news site. For the 2011-2012 school year, it won one prize for feature writing.
