Standards and Practices:
Accuracy
All evidence gathered by The Classic will be verified to maintain accuracy. Statements and comments provided by individuals will also be verified (and contextualized).
Quotes may be slightly edited to improve clarity and readability, but they must remain truthful to the original quote and intent.
All stories will be covered completely and accurately in order to publish an unbiased account of events. Multiple perspectives and lenses will be included to avoid bias or inconsistencies.
Impartiality and Neutrality
All staff members have an obligation to protect the impartiality and neutrality of The Classic. All staff members are expected to be aware of and avoid participating in events or interacting with groups/individuals that can harm the integrity of publication. Staff members are free to have their own opinions and participate in public activities, as long as they do not create an impression that they are speaking for The Classic. All staff will strive to challenge their own perspectives and write with many diverse perspectives to protect the impartiality of The Classic.
Conflicts of interest will be taken into consideration when interviewing, including minimizing and avoiding interviewing members of The Classic, as well as interests that could compromise the integrity of our content. These interests could include writing about family members and/or friends, paying for sources, having any direct involvement in the organizations/clubs mentioned in the writer’s articles, and expressing opinions on social media if it conflicts with the articles that the writer produces.
Transparency and Anonymity
Staff members will be transparent with all that they discover and publish, meaning that all facts referenced by The Classic must be clearly disclosed and made available to the public.
It is important to note that all sources that are granted anonymity must be kept anonymous, but their credibility and all information allowed to be shared will still be provided. Anonymity is only granted if the staff member(s) discuss it with the managing editors/editors-in-chief and receive approval on a case-by-case basis.
Limiting Harm
All reporters will aim to minimize or avoid harm to any individual or group referenced or interviewed by The Classic.
All individuals interviewed by The Classic will be treated with respect and professionalism.
Fairness
In order to write an unbiased article, all organizations or people named in the article will be given the opportunity to comment. However, those who comment or are being questioned in the article will not be given access to viewing the article prior to publishing even in the event that they ask to preview (unless given special clearance).
