Chifa: Where Cuisines Combine

Chifa: Where Cuisines Combine

Andrew Mitchel September 30, 2013
It is not often that one will find a fusion of foods from cultures as geographically and culturally different as Peru and China. Chifa, a Peruvian-Chinese restaurant in Jackson Heights successfully merges these two cuisines into a unique dining experience. “Chifa” is a slang word that can trace its origins to early 20th century Peru and Ecuador. With the influx of Chinese immigrants, many South American chefs began preparing Chinese cuisine, but supplementing it with Latin ingredients. The union of the two very distinct cuisines quickly became popular in Peru with immigrants and affluent locals alike. Though from the outside Chifa appears to be a humble little eatery, its creations and combinations of South American and East Asian food sets it apart as a delicious and intriguing restaurant.

Varsity volleyball volleys to win

Evan Noblesala September 30, 2013
On September 26, 2013 the girls’ varsity volleyball won their season opener against Bayside High School. Displaying a grand effort, the girls beat Bayside High School in two sets to none, both in thrilling fashion. In both sets the girls were up by at least 5 points and gave it up. In the first set, the girls were up 13-9 and had all the momentum but then gave up to a Bayside comeback. This also happened in the second set when the Lady Hawks were up 6-0 at the start, gave up the lead but would hold on to the lead when the score became 22-21. But the girls didn’t crack under the pressure and held it together winning both sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-23.

Girls soccer team craving the rave, but not the win

Natalie Gomez September 29, 2013
On Friday, September 27, the girls soccer team played Benjamin Cardozo High School on their home field at Kissena Park. Once again they were missing players, this time not due to injuries, but instead to the senior mixer, and the Hawks lost 2 to 0 to Cardozo. Missing senior captains Olivia McFadden and Athina Mihaliadis, who were both attending this year’s senior mixer, senior Nicole Bielecki and junior Stephanie Yeh took charge and directed the team during the warmup drills. Later, when the referees called both team’s captains up for the pregame chat Coach Vaselios Sioukas sent Nicole Bielecki and junior Nicole Gleizer to shake hands with the other team’s captains. Although captains Athina and Olivia were missed, Friday’s game provided a good sneak peek as to who may succeed Olivia and Athina as next year’s captains.

High school is a memorable time. Townsend Harris is known for its academics, but there is so much more to high school than hitting the books. In order to make high school as unforgettable as possible, it is important to participate in a variety of activities, including athletics.

From the Editors: On Regents, DOE earns another F

The Editors September 27, 2013
To say that the DOE’s new Regents grading system proved itself more inefficient than useful would be an understatement. Last June’s grading blunder not only skewed the results of many test scores and delayed some seniors’ graduation plans, but it wasted millions of dollars that could have been used elsewhere, and wasted the time of educators who are already hard-pressed for it. Under Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the city government has delighted in grading everything it can as a prelude to closure or termination; after this fiasco, would any independent assessor call the mayor’s latest educational policy anything but a failure?

For and Against: Not So Appropriate

Igor Portnoy September 27, 2013
Let’s face it––nobody is safe on the Internet these days. Hackers have gotten more ingenious over the years, and it doesn’t look like that trend will stop. To make things worse, our own government has hired these same hackers to snoop through all of our files and information in a violation of our basic rights. The National Security Agency, or NSA for short, has been monitoring Internet traffic not only in America but in many nations around the world since around 2005. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they also have phone records from nearly everyone in the country. This issue has gone unnoticed for too long, and I believe now is the time to draw the red line and preserve our privacy.

For and Against: I don’t spy a problem

Zion Kim September 27, 2013
There are children in Egypt who go to sleep every night listening to the sound of angry protesters and mobs outside their doors, afraid that when they wake up they might find their parents dragged away by government officials. There are child soldiers scattered throughout Africa that wake up every morning not knowing if it will be their last. These people would give anything to know that they will be safe. And what life-threatening situation do we Americans face? People reading our emails.
