This year, David Lonborg has joined the Social Studies department as an AP World History teacher.
Mr. Lonborg has spent the past 21 years teaching, beginning his career at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village. He then became a middle school teacher at MS 216 George J. Ryan in Fresh Meadows.
Mr. Lonborg explained his passion for history and spoke to the guidance he received as a student and how this pushed him to pursue teaching. “I wanted to pay it forward. I love working with young people,” he said.
Mr. Lonborg was in search of a new challenge when he heard about an open position at THHS. He was captivated by THHS’s student-centric environment. “THHS is an institution where the focus is really on pushing students to the highest of their academic abilities and truly giving them a love and passion for learning and thinking,” Mr. Lonborg said. Moreover, his previous work with Principal Condon at Martin Van Buren High School further impacted his decision to join the staff. He said, “[Principal Condon is] one of the best educators [and] leaders I’ve [worked] with.”
One of Mr. Lonborg’s favorite hobbies is traveling. His academic pursuits and fellowships have taken him to numerous countries. In addition to this, he is also very passionate about football. “I’m a Giants fan, so if I ever seem depressed during the fall months, you’ll know why,” he said.
Mr. Lonborg expressed his love for teaching and positive classroom dynamics. “I always love to hear [students’] stories, what they’re doing, and what they like. I always enjoy seeing their growth and their development over the years from young people into young adults that are later going to be the leaders of our society,” Mr. Lonborg said.
Sophomore Sebastian Arboleda spoke about Mr. Lonborg’s class. “[He’s] a good teacher and overall a nice [person],” he said. Sebastian’s favorite part about the class is the pop culture references he integrates. “I think he’s a great fit for THHS, and [I’m] looking forward to [seeing] how he continues,” he said.
Sophomore Harnoor Parmar shared similar thoughts about Mr. Lonborg. “[He] is overall very sweet, and I think that [helps] me respect him and stay focused in class,” she said. She now enjoys history because Mr. Lonborg has incorporated fun activities and prizes in his class.
