On September 25, participating seniors launched their campaigns at the annual Election Simulation Kickoff Rally in the courtyard, officially beginning Election Simulation Season.
The Election Simulation is an annual tradition at Townsend Harris where seniors across AP US Government and AP Macroeconomics classes participate in a mock election, either representing a real-life political candidates political action committee (PAC) special interest groups, or members of the media in order to educate the student body about the issues of the election. This year, presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will take center stage, alongside candidates in races of national import and local candidates.
“The energy was very much there,” said senior Jasmyn Pillay, who is running as DemocraticUS representative Don Davis. “All of the campaigns and interest groups were very much into it. Everyone was really involved and ready to play the part.”
The rally aimed to drum up support and enthusiasm for the simulation. It educated students about each candidate’s background and policies and the motives of various special interest groups. “It was inspiring to see different groups come together and support their respective teams.” said senior Nirjhana Paul, who is representing the incumbent Democratic senator of Pennsylvania, Bob Casey.
Senior Ava Jack, who is running as Bernie Moreno, a Republican candidate for Ohio’s senate seat, said she thought the rally went well: “I was proud of myself and my campaign.”
Sophomore Lillian Parrella said she loved getting to know “who was doing what this year” at the rally. “I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the presidential debate this year. It should be interesting,” said Lillian.
When asked what to tell students who are unfamiliar with the simulation, Ava said, “Watch the campaigns, vote for those you saw the most often and worked the most hard. Also, enjoy the debate, that’s often one of the best programs. You might get into fun events that could offer you extra credit and a fun experience.”
Nirjhana said, “The Election Simulation is a great tool to see why voting makes all the difference in our country. The people we choose to represent us fight for the values and rights we deserve.”
