In her years on the court for the Townsend Harris Girls Varsity Basketball Team, Eva Hannon has made big strides. As the team’s captain and a standout forward, Eva has played a significant role in the team’s success this season.
“I first started playing basketball when I was in third grade,” Eva said. Her parents had advised her to join a new sport, and so she took up basketball, playing in front of her house mostly because it was convenient. However, that did not last long as she quit in middle school because of her new passion for competitive dance.
Despite getting a later start, Eva found her rhythm and joined the varsity team at Townsend Harris, increasing her interest in this sport.
She later joined the New York Grit Club Basketball during her junior year. She said, “I had an amazing experience playing against tough competition, and I began pursuing the college recruitment process during that time.”
Eva became a senior captain this year. Her growth as a player is marked by her intense drive and ability to dominate both offensively and defensively.
As a captain, Eva motivates her teammates, sharing her basketball knowledge, and holding everyone accountable. Sophomore Jayla Leandre said, “She’s helped me gain more confidence playing in the post position, and she’s made the team dynamic really good.”
Eva’s strong leadership has not gone unnoticed by her teammates.
Senior co-captain Amala Madubuko said she notices Eva’s dedication and basketball IQ. “Eva’s advice and feedback are unmatched. She’s tough, and that helps push us all to improve,” Amala said.
Freshman Summer Ko admires Eva’s intensity during drills. “Her drive is so strong. It’s inspiring to see her go through defenders like it’s nothing,” Summer said.
Coach Lauren Caiaccia said she remembers Eva’s first season well and has known her potential since then. “Eva’s journey has been amazing. She started out with the basics, and now she’s averaging nearly a double-double every game,” she said. “Her competitive desire is second to none.”
Eva said that challenging games against some of the team’s toughest competitors have been most memorable to her. “I always enjoy playing against skilled teams. Scrimmaging against Metro is a highlight for me,” she said.
Meanwhile off the court, Eva also brings energy and joy to the team. “I love how she dances before games,” Summer said. “Playing with Eva is unforgettable. She makes it fun even during the toughest games,” Amala said.
With college scouts beginning to take notice, Eva’s aspirations are focused on continuing her basketball career at the collegiate level. “I’m excited to play at a higher level and meet other talented players,” Eva said. “The challenge is what motivates me.”
Coach Caiaccia said she has no doubt that Eva will succeed at the next level. “Eva has always been a leader on and off the court,” Ms. Caiaccia said. “I’m confident she’ll continue to thrive and represent our school well in college basketball.”
