The end of City Championship marks the end of the indoor season for the 7 who qualified to represent Townsend Harris. On February 22 the boys made their way to the Armory for one last time this winter.
The relay team placed 7th in the 4×800 with a time of 8:33, this is one of their best finishes in that event at the City level. The team consisted of senior captain Kyle Su, sophomores Abdoulaye Diallo and Noah Silversmith and freshman Muhamed Bicic. Although the boys were not completely satisfied with the result, the results still showed improvement.
For such a small team, Coach Martinez felt that these results were very remarkable showing the boys true hard work as well as focus throughout the season. Coach Martinez said, “Overall they came in 7th place which is a big accomplishment. Our boys have a lot of heart and determination and we are very proud of them.”
Due to close scheduling between the PSAL Queens Championships, held on Monday the 17, and the PSAL City Championships, the boys performance was surely weakened not allowing them to perform to their fullest potential. Coach Martinez added by saying, “We didn’t do as expected, so many athletes ran two or three events during Queens Champs so they were definitely tired.”
Despite their exhaustion, the boys still pushed to perform their best. Junior Minhaj Rahman placed 18th of 20 competitors in the Boys 55 Meter Hurdles with a time of 8:75 . Sophomore Abdoulaye Diallo placed 13th in the Boys 600 Meter Run with a time of 1:27. Finally, junior Yash Sharma placed 11th in the Boys 3200 Meter Run with a time of 10:29.
Regarding the teams performance, the boys seemed to be overall content with their result but still hold hope on improving during their outdoor season. Yash said, “I felt like the team did pretty well at City Champs this year. We had the most guys qualify this year than any other year so everyone did fantastic.”
Senior Thomas Sullivan added, “Everyone stepped up their game and that’s the next step for our team. We have a great group of guys,if we continue to perform like this, we will definitely bring home a Queens Championship next season.”
As the indoor track season quickly comes to a close, the boys are mentally as well as physically training for their outdoor season in hopes of continuing their streak. The final indoor track meet of the season will be the PSAL Freshman Sophomore City Championship at the Armory Track on Sunday March 2 at 2:00pm.
As for next season, the boys are ready to give it their all. Sharma confidently said, “I Plan on really making this season count, as this is quite an important season in that it’s the final season of the year.”
