In just their third match of the season, the boys tennis team triumphed over Bayside High School, moving into a record 3-0 for the year and handing Bayside their third consecutive loss. Singles match victories from senior Daniel Corona and Max Prohorov and Mitchell Mu played key roles in this 5-0 effort. Double match victories by freshmen Aleksa Pljakic and Nicolas Oltean, as well a sophomore Derrick Mu and senior Jeremy Hirsch also contributed to the win.
The brutally cold and windy conditions of Crocheron Park was an early obstacle for Max, but was later used to help him beat his opponent. “I started out slow, but I adjusted to the windy conditions and played more patiently and as a result I’m happy with how I pulled it off. I took the match one point at a time, and steadily I began to catch up. He [the competitor] started to get frustrated and I kept the pressure up. I knew that as soon as I would have the upper hand mentally, I would win the match.”
For Daniel, this match went beyond his own singles victory. Daniel explained, “The team played really well. No complaints from me. The strongest points of the match came from the first doubles team, led by Alex and Nick, who are doing a really good job so far.”
Mitchell added on, commending his teammates’ resiliency and strong efforts. Despite this, the second singles player was critical in analyzing his own performance, “Even though I had won, I felt that my performance was not at it’s best. I made quite a few unforced errors. However, I was able to use my strengths to overcome my errors.”
With this latest victory, the Hawks remain the only team in the Queens A Division with an undefeated record. Their next string of matches when they play Benjamin N. Cardozo, Francis Lewis, and Forest Hills High School, consecutively, having begun this past Monday.
