This fall, rising senior Sergio Luna is hoping to lead the Boys Varsity Soccer team through what could be its most promising season in years. After seasons of missing the playoffs, the team is aiming for a comeback and Sergio’s role as captain could be at the heart of that effort.
“I’ve been playing soccer since I was five,” said Sergio, who has dedicated much of his life to the sport. His inspiration came from his environment: “I got into soccer by watching it and being influenced by the people around me. Watching Messi play in the 2014 World Cup was amazing so he inspired me.”
For Sergio, leadership is not being perfect and is more than just guiding the team during games. “Being a leader to me is being someone who can make mistakes, learn from them, and show others how to not make these mistakes,” he said, showing how he not only carries himself but also encourages growth in others.
His teammates and coach alike speak highly of Sergio’s influence and dedication to the team. His ability to reflect and rally the team after a loss is one of the clearest examples of his leadership.
“He definitely helps teach us skills, inspires us to be a better team. If we’re down in energy, he’s always trying to get us back up,” said Julian Kleinmuntz, a sophomore teammate. “Even if we’re down by two or three goals, he’s always keeping the pressure up.”
Julian remembers Sergio would motivate the team during tough moments last season. At halftime he would have little pep talks and often stepped up to regroup the team, reinforce strategies, and push everyone to stay focused. He was constantly checking in with teammates, and offering encouragement.
Coach Matthew Curiale said he has witnessed Sergio’s growth firsthand. “Sergio joined the team as a freshman and quickly earned his spot through hard work and determination. He’s not afraid to ask questions or offer guidance. He’s grown into a passionate, vocal leader.”
However, Sergio has faced his share of challenges. He recalled one of the toughest games of the season, the final one against Far Rockaway: “It was a sad way to go out, but I feel like it made us stronger for the upcoming season.” The team lost 4-1. He added, “I think I just need to force myself to sacrifice more and play harder when we go up against teams like that.”
During the offseason, Sergio focuses on strength training, conditioning, and sharpening his skills in preparation for the next season. “He’s always training. He’s always working his hardest. When he says, ‘Let’s give it our all,’ he does give it his all and encourages the rest of us to do the same,” Julian said.
Looking ahead, Sergio remains focused on these goals: “To make it farther, make it to playoffs… and try to lead my team with my motivation.”
