The Townsend Harris fencing team looked strong in their first match of the season against Jamaica High School. The épée and foil teams each won by a final score of 45 to 35, with senior épée captain Jordan Brandwein doing an exceptional job in épée and seniors Matt Rosales and captain Andy Yeung standing out in foil.
Most students had the opportunity to fence, and some students like sophomore Geoffrey Lin were able to participate in the first match of their fencing careers.
The team had a lot of chemistry, often giving each other words of advice or encouragement, and continuously cheering one another on. There was also a more relaxed environment during the match, due to the fact that the team felt confident going into the match since they knew that Jamaica was not a very challenging team.
This win has left the team feeling optimistic about the rest of the season. Jordan said, “Our new fencers all showed the potential for more victories like this one today.” Sophomore manager Rebekah Jones also said “This match was a great way to start the season. I think this is going to be a great season with great players.”
