Earlier this evening, Principal Brian Condon was honored as the first-ever winner of the Press Pass NYC/Deadline Club School Administrator of the Year Award. According to the awards committee, “This inaugural honor was created to recognize a New York City public school administrator each year whose leadership demonstrates exemplary support for student journalism and the work of the journalism educators and student journalists at their school, including unwavering support for student press rights and freedom.”
The Classic often works on difficult and controversial stories. At some schools, student journalists wouldn’t even be allowed to begin work on reporting such stories. At THHS, Mr. Condon always speaks to The Classic on the record and respects the first amendment rights of student journalists. The Classic holds the THHS administration to a high standard and can be tough, but we can say with confidence that when it comes to supporting The Classic‘s tradition of student-run, independent journalism, Mr. Condon exceeds standards and more than deserves this award. Managing editors Ryan Chen and Yasmeen Ismail, along with Classic Advisor Brian Sweeney, joined Mr. Condon earlier this evening as he received his award at the annual awards ceremony held by the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (known as “The Deadline Club”).
Congratulations to Mr. Condon for winning this award.
