During the 2024-2025 school year, Anthony Santos, a former community school director at PS/MS 34 in Manhattan, joined the guidance staff, bringing over a decade of experience working with younger students.
At his past job, Mr. Santos most enjoyed running after-school programs and generally interacting with students of varying ages. “I was never somebody who wanted to be a teacher, but I always liked working with kids,” said Mr. Santos.
He shared that after working in a pre-K to middle school setting for a long time, he was “ready for a new challenge.” He said, “I worked there for almost 11 years, and I got to see my kids go to high school, but I never got to see how they were doing in high school.” He was eager to follow that journey further, which led him to THHS.
Former Assistant Principal of Guidance Jessica Graf, who ran the hiring process, expressed spoke to The Classic last spring about why she hired Mr. Santos. “He brings in a positive demeanor and a growth-oriented approach to working with young people,” said Ms. Graf. According to her, “It’s evident that he’s been working hard to build strong relationships with our students, and support them academically and socially.”
Recently retired guidance counselor Jeremy Wang also spoke to The Classic about the new hire last spring. He called Mr. Santos a “breath of fresh air.” He said, “He is not from a traditional high school, so he can bring his experiences with different communities to THHS.”
“Initially, I hope that he gets used to the Townsend Harris pace, routine, and school culture,” added Mr. Wang, referring to the school’s rigorous academic expectations and the active student body.
Many students said they appreciate Mr. Santos’ positive and supportive approach. Senior Sinthiya Saika said, “I feel very comfortable talking to him about any concerns or questions. His responses are always thoughtful, well-explained, and reassuring, which creates a really supportive environment.”
She added, “He doesn’t just give advice—he actively listens, offers options, and helps create a plan that feels realistic and encouraging.” In only a short time, Mr. Santos has already guided her through academic challenges and built a strong sense of trust, she said.
Mr. Santos said he looks forward to continuing to build new connections as he settles into his new role during this school year.
