With last Thursday’s win over the High School for Construction Trades, Engineering, and Architecture, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team, led by senior captains Emma Wu, Nicole Saenz, and junior captain Keira Legaspi, now stands third place in the Queens-I 2A Division with a record of 4-1. After seeing success early in the season, including a 6-0 win at Goldstein High School’s tournament, the team has shared their high aspirations for the rest of the season.
“Our vision going into every practice and game is to get at least 1% better,” said Emma. “If we keep this mentality, we’ll be ready for future tournaments and eventually the playoffs.” So far this season, Emma has taken home All-Star awards from both the Seward Park and Goldstein High School tournaments.
“We’ve seen the level to which we can play at and aspire to match and raise that bar with every game,” said Keira. “Our team meshes really well together and that is one of the largest contributors to our success.”
The captains also expressed collective pride in their team chemistry and positive spirits. “We believe our on and off the court connection as a team is something that other schools do not have,” said Emma. “We trust each other and each other’s abilities to the point where we know we will be successful. We are a team used to success, and we know what we need to do in specific moments to gain a victory.”
Adding to this, Nicole said, “We went into each tournament game confident, with high energy, and on the court, everyone communicated. Whenever anyone makes a mistake, they don’t let it affect their performance, instead using it as motivation. Everyone on the bench keeps the spirits high by cheering, no matter what.”
Coach Christian Castillo said he attributes the team’s early success to their bond and camaraderie. “We always work together,” he said, “from improving skills during practices to figuring out the best possible lineups, tournaments to attend, and scrimmages to set up.”
Manager Brian Merino said, “I think this year’s starting line up is pretty strong because of the commitment that each of the starters gives to volleyball outside of school. Some of the younger players do not have as much confidence and experience, but that’s okay as it comes with time.”
Looking at the journey ahead, Nicole said, “One piece of advice I’d give to our team’s underclassmen is to not let it get in your head when you make a mistake.”
“Staying focused and positive will allow us to demonstrate our skills during games and will hopefully result in winning against higher-level teams,” said junior member Mikayla Jimenez. “We all share the same goals, and this creates a motivating atmosphere.”
