This fall, the Boys Varsity Soccer Team competed in ten games from September to October, ending the season with a record of two wins, three ties, and five losses.
Coach Curiale praised the team for their chemistry and effort through the season. “Every game was highly competitive, and the boys displayed tremendous grit and passion on the field,” Mr. Curiale said.
A highlight of the season came on September 26 against Middle College High School at LaGuardia Community, where Townsend Harris earned a 3-2 victory. Julian Kleinmuntz led the way with multiple saves, while sophomore Aidan Ortiz contributed with a crucial assist and several defensive stops that helped to halt Middle College’s attack.
Despite the high points, the season ultimately resulted in a number of defeats.
“We really let ourselves down, and that’s our fault. It’s on us. We lost some games that we shouldn’t have. We tied a lot of games,” junior Tristan Lyner said.
On October 5, the Hawks faced off against Far Rockaway Educational Campus at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Townsend Harris lost 3-4, putting up a fight but ultimately losing. Despite the close final score, Aidan Ortiz stood out with being able to control the backline.
The team also faced moments where the midfield, defense, and attack were not fully connected, resulting in a game that showed moments of strong play as well as areas that needed growth. “Our midfield defense and attack were all kind of separate, which led us to not really be connected when we played the ball to each other,” said Tristan.
Aidan has thoughts about steps to take to practice for next season. “So what that means is actually getting together as a team or into groups where you can work efficiently and work on specific skills that will help the team. And that doesn’t mean, ‘oh, I’m going to only focus on shooting.’ No, that means being able to get better at everything” he said. They need to work to “find where this team fits and all the different puzzles,” a goal that will keep their minds sharp and attentive for the upcoming season.
“We’re all looking forward to playing. We just love playing soccer. So even if we didn’t do well, we’re not gonna let that affect us and we’re gonna go on next season. We’re gonna do better,” Tristan said.
