After two playoff games last week, the Townsend Harris Girls Varsity basketball team has once again emerged victorious. The team’s first game was on February 27 against Frederick Douglass Academy and they won with a score of 78 to 21. Later in the week, they faced more of a challenge from New Dorp High School but pulled off the victory, 57 to 48.

The top scorers in the game against Frederick Douglass Academy included Aissatou Lam with 13 points, Loise Arcega with 11 points, and Natalia Ramlogan with 10 points. The first half ended with a score of 40 to 7, leaving little hope for the opposing team. The girls went on to score 38 more points in the second half, securing their victory.

The game against 5th-seeded New Dorp in Staten Island was more daunting, as the Hawks are ranked 12th and did not play on their home court.

Junior guard Ioanna Giannopoulou said that “patience was key” to their victory, while also “staying aggressive and pushing the ball” when possible. The leading performers for this game were Senior center Aissatou Lam with 16 points and 10 rebounds, along with junior guards Caylin Chan (Classic sports editor) and Audrey Lin (Classic opinion editor) each scoring 12 points. The first half was really close ending with a buzzer beater by Audrey Lin to put the girls up 30-27 at half time. The girls scored 27 more points in the second half to punch their ticket to the quarter finals.

Aissatou said, ¨I am really proud of how we played together in our game against New Dorp, especially against a team who was a higher seed than we were. We played very up tempo and continued to push each other every chance we got. I am so glad that we reached the quarterfinals since it’s a great way to end off an already phenomenal season.”

The next game for THHS will be the quarter-finals against New York City powerhouse Murry Bergtraum HS.
