The Boys Varsity Fencing team was victorious in its sixth match of the season held earlier today. Facing fencers from Robert F. Kennedy High School, the team won 90-32.
“I thought that the game overall was a successful one,” said junior captain Aidan Ng. “We had a high point differential in both epee and foil, with our individual fencers performing well. I’m proud of my team for fencing hard and hope to see them keep it up for future games.”
The team now has a record of four wins and two losses, and has won their past four matches.
Coach Diane Ramirez said that she commends the fencers for their excellent efforts, focusing on their skills in point control, smart distancing, and teamwork.
In a match against Jamaica High School on October 16, the team secured a 90-44 victory. Fencing team member and sophomore Aidan Scullari reflected on a moment in the match, “A turning point that led to a win was when I was fencing a player from Jamaica. It was a tie game, 5-5. …I managed to beat his blade away and score the winning touch.”
The team also celebrated an exciting milestone with the rookie fencers’ first match on October 23. “Their effort and excitement brought a lot of energy to the team,” said sophomore fencer Zach Ustoyev.
Coach Ramirez praised “veteran players and captains” for teaching the team “rookies” how to step up.
Earlier this season, the team faced its toughest opponents yet in Francis Lewis High School. Francis Lewis is currently undefeated and beat THHS in their first match with a score of 90-60. Team members said that matches against them were often unpredictable, demanding sharp focus, strategy, and quick decision-making from every fencer on the team.
“They always put up a good fight,” Zach said, “but I think we could beat them if everyone on our team locks in and stays focused.”
