The guidance department at Townsend Harris advises students about high school life and how to plan for beyond high school. However, not all students take advantage of guidance counselors’ open-door policy. Students and staff were asked if they thought that implementing a yearly mandatory check in would be beneficial to student and guidance counselor communication.
Throughout high school, THHS’s guidance department serves as a resource for students as they navigate through high school and plan for their lives beyond that. The number of mandatory individual meetings a guidance counselor holds varies between the six guidance counselors. Most guidance counselors hold one mandatory individual meeting during junior year.
But besides this meeting, in order to meet with counselors individually, students need to take the initiative to visit them. While the guidance department has an open-door policy, not all students take advantage of it whether that be because students are nervous to reach out, or because students don’t think a meeting is necessary. As a result, they do not receive an equal amount of support. It raises the question of whether there should be yearly mandatory check-ins with your guidance counselor to ensure that all students take advantage of the availability of their guidance counselors.
The Classic interviewed members of the THHS community about their communication with their guidance counselor and whether there should be yearly mandatory check-ins with their counselor.
