The Townsend Harris community is mourning the sudden passing of history teacher Joseph Seidel. In an email sent informing students of the news on Sunday, Principal Brian Condon called Mr. Seidel a “beloved teacher” and said tomorrow’s schedule will be altered as the community begins “mourning Mr. Seidel’s passing.”
In 2022, Mr. Seidel joined the social studies department, where he taught AP United States History. In his first interview with The Classic, Mr. Seidel said that coming to Townsend Harris represented a new challenge in his teaching career and an opportunity to prove himself as an educator. In his four years working at THHS, Mr. Seidel quickly proved himself up to that challenge, earning a reputation as an engaging and supportive educator.
Almost immediately after Mr. Condon emailed the community, students began circulating a GoFundMe page created to support Mr. Seidel’s family. The page calls Mr. Seidel a person who “touched the lives of many in his community” and inspired “students and friends alike with his kindness and dedication.”
According to Mr. Condon’s email, school officials will provide support resources for students in the coming days. For tomorrow, zero band classes are canceled and regular Monday classes will begin at 8:20AM. The rest of the day will follow a standard Monday schedule.
As members of the school community process this news, The Classic will follow up with additional coverage of Mr. Seidel’s life and legacy.
