On Friday, many Harrisites came out to support the JV Girls Volleyball team’s first home game against Benjamin N. Cardozo High School. Excitement filled the atmosphere of the Wanda Nix Gymnasium as the girls battled hard, keeping the game close throughout the three sets played. Ultimately, the Townsend Harris JV Girls Volleyball team fell short to Cardozo who took home the win with 2 out of the 3 sets in their favor.

At the start of the first set, THHS had a small lead with Cardozo following closely throughout the entire match. But in the end, THHS was able to take the set 25-23. The girls put in their best effort seizing any opportunity they could.

“We were all so pumped. We started off strong and we wanted to keep the intensity up so we began chanting and screaming throughout the the rest of the game,” said sophomore Emmaly Gutierrez.

In the second set, THHS was determined to continue their lead. Despite their efforts, THHS lost their second set to Cardozo 25-17. The girls still had hopes in taking the win and the crowd was right behind them with powerful cheers and a few pointers from the sideline.

Unfortunately, the third and final set for THHS marked the end of the game, losing 25-18. Although THHS was not fortunate enough to defeat their opponents, they still gave it their all, resulting in a very intense and close game.

Several outstanding performances stand out at this match including Amanda Chan with 3 aces, 2 service points, and 3 kills. Sophomore Eriselda Cuni had 4 aces, 2 services points, and 1 kills; sophomore Kellie Zestanakis had 2 aces and 3 kills.

Eriselda said, “Even though we lost, next time we face them, we’ll make a comeback.”

The girls surely showed their best efforts despite having played their first game of the season against Bayside High School the day before. As Kellie put it “ we could have easily beat that team if we weren’t so sore from beating Bayside the day before!” The girls did not seem to be discouraged by their lost and appeared to be fired up for what’s to come further in the season.
