On January 6, the girls varsity basketball team hosted their division rival Benjamin N. Cardozo High School Lady Judges in the Hawks’ first game since the winter break. The Hawks outplayed the Lady Judges, handily beating them 49-33. The game was close in the first quarter with the Hawks leading 16-12 going into the second quarter. But the Hawks’ defense shined in the second quarter, as they only gave up one point while scoring 8 to take a 24-13 lead going into halftime. The Hawks were able to control the second half, outscoring the Lady Judges 25-20. Although the Lady Judges had more assists and three-point field goals than the Hawks, the girls still managed to tally up nine assists, 38 rebounds, 11 of which were offensive, 17 two-point field goals, two three-point field goals, and nine free throws made. Senior forward Sierra Berkel and junior guard Debra Chan lead the Hawks. Sierra got her third double-double of the season by totaling 18 points and 12 rebounds and she was also 100% from the free throw line. Debra also reached double digits in scoring, getting 13 points and two assists and was also 100% from the free throw line. Seniors forward Imani Springer and guard Michelle Gan also helped out big time with rebounds, getting six rebounds and five rebounds respectively. The Hawks have now pushed their regular season game winning streak to an 41 straight games and are now 7-0 on the season. Sierra said, ‘We are working together and practicing hard and that is why we are winning games.” The Hawks are in first place in the Queens A West Division, with a one game lead over John Bowne, whom the Hawks have already beaten this season. The Hawks next game is on Wednesday, January 8th at home against the Richmond Hill High School Lady Lions at 4:30 pm.
