On January 8, the girls varsity basketball team hosted the Richmond Hill High School Lady Lions. The Hawks took care of business at home, winning in convincing fashion, 52-17. The Hawks dominated from the start, outscoring the Lady Lions 20-6 in the first quarter and never letting up from there. The Hawks never gave up more than six points in any one quarter, holding the Lady Lions to nine points in the first half and eight points in the second half. This was the Hawks best defensive showing, which resulted in the fewest points they have allowed for the whole first half of the season. The Hawks controlled all parts of the game as they had 16 assists, 38 rebounds, with 16 of them coming on the offensive side, 23 two-point field goals, one three-point field goal, and three free throws made. Sophomore forward Tanja Miketic had an excellent game, getting ten rebounds and scoring twelve points. Junior guard Meraldina Ziljkic was unselfish as she totalled seven assists. The Hawks regular season game winning streak has now been extended to 42 straight games, and eight games on the season which is  at the halfway point. The Hawks are now 8-0 and sit in first place in the Queens A West Division, two games ahead of division rivals Benjamin N. Cardozo High School and John Bowne High School. Meraldine said, “I think we’ve been quite humble despite the success that has come to the team.” The next game for the Hawks is Monday, January 13th against the Long Island City Lady Bulldogs on the road. In their first meeting of the year, the Hawks won  47-24, and the Hawks look to continue their winning ways on Monday.
